Mikkeli’s summer begins at the Market Square on 7 June

Ihmisiä torilla.

Mikkeli’s summer season will be officially launched in style on Saturday 7 June with a family-friendly event at Hallitustori Market Square. Entry is free of charge.

The event is organised in cooperation between the City of Mikkeli and active local organisations. The aim of the Summer Opening is to showcase Mikkeli’s rich and diverse summer offerings, bring together various local operators, and warmly welcome both residents and visitors to enjoy summer in Mikkeli.

The morning kicks off with karaoke in the market cafés – featuring music to suit all tastes, from heavy metal to schlager and children’s songs. Morning karaoke runs from 9:00 to 10:00 in three different cafés, hosted by karaoke presenters, offering an early chance to get into the spirit before the main event. After the stage programme, there will also be a lunchtime karaoke session from 13:00 to 14:00. All brave singers will be rewarded with a surprise gift!

On the market square stage, visitors will enjoy performances and previews from Mikkeli Summer Theatre and the Mikkeli Music Festival. A panel discussion in Finnish will highlight the importance of music and cultural events to Mikkeli’s summer and its residents. The programme also includes info sessions on upcoming events: an introduction to the major orienteering event Jukola 2025, and the three-day St. Michel horse races. There will also be dance performances and live music throughout the day. The main act will be the nationally known artist Hovimuusikko Ilkka.

Around the market square, there will be activities for all ages. Ponies from the Mikkeli trotting school will delight children, and a hobbyhorse course will offer a chance to compete. You’ll also find information stands from Miksei Mikkeli Development Company, Mikkeli Theatre, LähiTapiola, Mikkeli Entrepreneurs, and the local Rotary Club. The escape room-themed experience point by Mysteeri Mikkeli will add a sense of adventure to the day. LähiTapiola’s stand will also hand out balloons to the youngest visitors. Everyone is welcome to take part in the Lavis dance demonstration for a bit of shared fun!

Events will also take place in other parts of the city during the day. Saimaa Stadiumi will host a major wellbeing event, and dance enthusiasts can join Lavis dance fitness at the Hiihtomäki dance pavilion or take part in a guided walking tour in Finnish, Mikkeli through Sylvi’s Eyes. A small fee is charged for the guided walk.

The event is free and open to everyone. Mikkeli’s Summer Opening warmly welcomes all to enjoy the atmosphere, join the programme and start the summer season together.
