The City of Mikkeli is advancing to the next phase of the Puhistamo development project, located on the shores of Lake Saimaa. A plot allocation competition has been launched in accordance with a competitive negotiation procedure, aiming to find partners to help build a new hub for tourism, events, and experiences in the Mikkeli region.
The competition builds on a market dialogue held earlier in 2025, which explored the needs and visions of potential stakeholders. Through this newly launched competition, the city seeks developers interested in contributing to the planning and implementation of a project that will reshape Mikkeli’s urban landscape.
A concept that sparks interest
The approximately seven-hectare development area is within walking distance of the city centre, adjacent to the historic Kenkävero site. Its location by Lake Saimaa, near Highway 5 and the travel centre, offers excellent conditions for creating a diverse and attractive service hub.
“We are now looking for ideas, doers, and investors with the courage and vision to elevate tourism and events in the Mikkeli region to a new level,” says Topiantti Äikäs, Director of Land Use for the City of Mikkeli.
Competition structure and participation
The competition will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, participants are to submit a preliminary concept proposal by 17 October 2025. Negotiations will then begin with selected candidates, and final proposals will be submitted according to a schedule defined during the negotiations.
Evaluation criteria will emphasise:
- The uniqueness of the concept
- Quality of implementation
- Utilisation of circular economy principles
- Suitability to the area’s cultural and natural values
“The future of Puhistamo will be built on creativity, collaboration, and the strengths of the region. This competition is a step towards a development that will enrich both the city and the wider region,” says Olli Marjalaakso, Director of Development at Mikkeli Development Company Miksei Ltd.
