The traditional gathering of Nordic twin cities was hosted by Borås, Sweden, with participants from Vejle, Denmark, and Molde, Norway, in addition to Mikkeli.
At the August meeting in Borås, the city of Mikkeli was represented by the following elected officials: Minna Pöntinen (Green), Jatta Juhola (Social Democrat), Heli Kauppinen (Green), and Jani Sensio (National Coalition). Among the city officials were mayor Janne Kinnunen and strategy and development manager Aki Kauranen. Additionally, Timo Paakki, CEO of Mikkeli Development Company Miksei, also took part in the trip.
The program included an update on the status of the twin cities, a visit to a local textile center, discussions on the circular economy, networking, and shared leisure time.
“The meeting once again highlighted many common topics, such as digitalization and securing expertise in healthcare. At the Nordic level, cities share many similar strengths but also challenges”, said Aki Kauranen.
The Nordic Express youth exchange was also held in Borås from August 5th to 9th. The Nordic Express served as a youth exchange between the twin cities (Mikkeli, Borås, Vejle, and Molde). A total of 30 young people and eight instructors participated in the exchange. Mikkeli was represented by 11 young people and two instructors.
During the week, the young people got to know each other and had the opportunity to exchange experiences and news. The youths also visited various locations in Borås.
Two years ago, the twin cities gathered in Mikkeli. Next time, in two years, Molde will serve as the host city.
