The city’s emergency management team convened on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, to review the damage caused by heavy rain in the city center on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. The team noted that the rainfall resulted in an exceptionally unusual and sudden water load, which caused flooding in approximately ten properties owned by the city. At the same time, water damaged several street structures. According to various estimates, the water load was 30-45 mm over a short period, which is an extremely unusual amount. There is no record of such a sudden amount of rainfall in the area for about 40 years.

The city, together with its service providers, has been assessing the sites where water has caused damage. At this point, the extent of the damage is becoming clearer, and a significant portion of the affected sites has been identified. Repairs have been made, and measures to prevent further damage have been initiated.

For properties owned by the city where water has entered but have not yet been reported to the city’s building services, it is recommended to make a report through the city’s feedback system (in Finnish), even if the water has already dried up and no visible damage is apparent.

The impact of yesterday’s flooding on city-operated services has been relatively minor. Children in the Kujakatit group, which operates under Peitsari daycare, have been relocated to other facilities within Peitsari daycare. No other significant operational changes have been made due to the floodwaters in the city’s own operations.

The city thanks all employees, contractors, and others who helped in the situation for their proactive actions.
