The City of Mikkeli will no longer use the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The city’s X account will be removed from the platform next week. The account’s last post on X was in October 2024.
The City of Mikkeli had been using Twitter as part of its online communications since 2014. However, the current version of X has become less significant in the city’s communication strategy. At the same time, several other Finnish cities and organisations have also abandoned the platform.
“We feel that our presence on X has come to an end as part of the evolving social media landscape and our new working methods. X is no longer the effective platform that Twitter was a few years ago,” says Heidi Hänninen, Mikkeli’s Communications and Marketing Manager.
“Decreased reach, poor-quality and poorly moderated discussions, as well as the example set by other cities, made it clear that we should step away from the social media channel we use the least,” Hänninen continues.
The City of Mikkeli will continue to actively share news, decisions, and event updates on Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, the city posts job advertisements and work-related announcements on Linkedin. Videos and video recordings are published on the city’s Youtube channel.
