Strategy
April 2026, the City Council of Mikkeli approved the city’s strategy for the years 2026–2030. The strategy’s vision is: International capital of clean water & comprehensive security on the shores of Saimaa.
Mikkeli’s strategy guides the city’s development toward a prosperous, vibrant, and safe everyday life. This work is carried out in collaboration with residents, businesses, and partners, with the goal of ensuring a smooth and high quality of life in Mikkeli at every stage of life.
The values of Mikkeli in the strategy are:
1. Fair: Empathy and equality drive our actions. Everyone can be themselves.
2. Brave: We make decisions, try new things and adapt to the changing world.
3. Constructive: We operate openly and sustainably, strengthening cooperation.
4. Secure: We are building a safe everyday life, anticipating risks and working together to ensure we are prepared.

The strategy consists of five themes
1. Wellbeing for local residents and smooth daily life: We invest in smooth everyday life, high-quality services, and safety. Well-being is built together, with a particular focus on supporting children and families.
2. Education, competence and employment: We are building a coherent educational pathway and strengthening connections with working life. We attract skilled professionals to our city.
3. Vitality, businesses and investment: We create a business-friendly operating environment that attracts sustainable investments and supports growth.
4. Economy and impact: We maintain a sustainable economy and allocate resources effectively to achieve the greatest impact.
5. Staff – Strategy implementers: A competent and well-being workforce of the City of Mikkeli enables the strategy to be put into practice.
