The Marshal’s Saloon Car
The Mikkeli railway station is home to the saloon train car used by C.G.E. Mannerheim in 1939–1946. The car includes a saloon compartment, five sleeping cabins, a kitchen and a bathroom. Mannerheim’s saloon car was usually connected to the Defence Command’s train, but it also often traveled with regular civilian trains. Mannerheim made over a 100 journeys in the wooden car, totaling over 78 000 km.
The Marshal’s Saloon Car, maintained by Mikkeli City Museums, is traditionally open to the public only once a year on Mannerheim’s birthday on 4 June. The day is also celebrated as the Defence Force’s Flag Day.
